Who Licenses Assisted Living in Florida

Assisted living facilities (ALFs) are licensed by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). Some hold additional licenses, such as:

  • Limited Nursing Services (LNS)
  • Extended Congregate Care (ECC)
  • Limited Mental Health (LMH)

These allow the community to provide extra services. As of October 2026, a new Florida law creates a separate memory care services license. The state has until June 1, 2027, to write the rules, so ask each community whether it plans to hold one.

How to Look It Up

  1. Go to FloridaHealthFinder.gov.
  2. Search for the facility by name, city, or county.
  3. Check the license status and type.
  4. Review inspection reports and any listed deficiencies.

What to Look For

  • Is the license active?
  • How many deficiencies were cited, and how serious were they?
  • Were problems corrected?
  • Are there repeated issues in the same area?

Ask the Community

If you see something concerning, ask the community about it. A good community will explain what happened and what changed.

What the Extra Licenses Mean

  • Limited Nursing Services (LNS): lets the community provide certain nursing services beyond standard assisted living.
  • Extended Congregate Care (ECC): allows more intensive care so residents can stay as needs increase.
  • Limited Mental Health (LMH): for communities serving residents with certain mental health needs.

If Mom has growing medical needs, ask whether the community holds the license that would let her stay.

Memory Care and Special Training

In Florida, communities that advertise special care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias must meet extra standards, including staff dementia training. Ask how staff are trained and how often.

Beyond the License

A clean record is a good start, not the whole story. Visit more than once, talk with residents and families, eat a meal, and ask about staffing on nights and weekends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ask the community what happened and what changed. One old citation that was corrected is different from the same problem showing up year after year.
