Independent Living

Best for: moms and dads who are mostly healthy but tired of home upkeep, cooking, or driving.

  • Private apartment
  • Meals, housekeeping, and maintenance
  • Activities and transportation
  • No daily personal care

Assisted Living

Best for: moms and dads who need help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or medications.

  • Private or shared apartment
  • Help with personal care and medications
  • Meals, housekeeping, and activities
  • Staff on site around the clock
  • Licensed in Florida by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA)

Memory Care

Best for: moms and dads living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

  • Secure surroundings to prevent wandering
  • Structured routines
  • Staff trained in dementia care
  • Often a separate neighborhood within an assisted living community

How to Decide

Ask yourself:

  1. Can Mom safely handle bathing, dressing, and medications on her own?
  2. Is she eating regularly and well?
  3. Has she fallen or gotten lost?
  4. Is memory loss affecting her safety?
  5. Is she lonely?

If Mom is safe and healthy but lonely or overwhelmed by the house, independent living may be enough. If she needs help with daily tasks, assisted living is likely the right fit. If memory loss is causing safety issues, memory care is worth a closer look.

What About Couples?

When Mom and Dad need different levels of care, a life plan community or a campus with both assisted living and memory care can let them stay close.
